The E: Shannon+Chris in Birmingham, MI

I was so excited when Erin, a 2008 bride (you may remember her beautiful fall wedding at the River Birch Lodge) referred her friend Shannon to me. Shannon is a Michigan native who now lives in California and is on the staff at the sublime French Laundry restaurant. She and her fiance, Chris, are planning an August wedding in Michigan, and we had the pleasure of shooting their engagement portraits when they were in town during the holidays. (I think it must be easier to love the cold weather when you live in California. :) We would have gladly gone out West for the session, but had we done so, we would have missed Shannon’s mother’s beautiful home, along with all of the fun that is downtown Birmingham at Christmas.)

Shannon and Chris, we had a wonderful time with you and we’re truly looking forward to your wedding day! Thanks so much for sharing an afternoon with us. We hope you enjoy your photos!

Gimme Shelter

I’m so sad to report that Conde Nast has announced the closing of Domino Magazine, effective next month.

With the demise of Blueprint, House and Garden, Cottage Living, and O at Home, Domino has remained an exquisitely bright spot in the world of shelter and design magazines.  I asked for, and received, their new book about home decor as a Christmas gift and I have been thoroughly enjoying it as I looked forward forward to future issues of the publication.  At a time when the economy has forced many of us to renew our focus on home, family life, and what the French so aptly call the art of living, it is doubly disturbing to learn of Domino’s untimely end.  I will miss the well written articles, inspiring ideas, and, above all, Melanie Acevedo’s gorgeous photographs.

As a long-term subscriber, I can only hope that Conde Nast will reconsider this very sad decision.

Design Tuesday: That Dress!

Don’t you love the new First Lady’s Inaugural dress? It is an Isabelle Toledo. The designer said she did not know that her dress had been chosen until she saw Mrs. Obama on television this morning. Fabulous! I can’t wait to see what she wears tonight. (Photo© Charles Dharapak via AP)

Hail to the Chief!

Morning in America. At last.
Today is a day I never thought I’d live to see. I plan to enjoy every last second of it and I sincerely hope that you will do the same. Whatever your politics or beliefs, we are all witness to history today.
The studio will re-open tomorrow.

Living the Dream: Happy Birthday, Dr. King!

We will be celebrating Dr. King’s birthday today with our traditional day of community service . If any of you are unfamiliar with Dr. King’s landmark speech, see the video below. (Gotta love You Tube!)
We will also be closed tomorrow as we savor the inauguration of Barack Obama. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood!
