Working with Jenny Ferris was so much fun. One of the things I really love about this recent bride is her seemingly endless knowledge about all things Detroit. Little wonder, then, that she chose to be married at Fort Street Presbyterian, which is one of Detroit’s oldest and most beautiful churches.
Mention Detroit to most outsiders and they immediately think of cars, Motown, or the tragic events of 1967. Few realize that we live in a city that was and is vibrant and filled with history.
Fort Street Presbyterian Church is just one example of the city’s rich architectural heritage. The beautiful Gothic Revival-style building has survived several fires and rebuilding projects. According to State of Michigan Historical Preservation Office website, “the first building with the current design was dedicated in 1855 from plans by the Detroit firm of Octavius and Albert H. Jordan with James Anderson. Destroyed in 1876, the church was rebuilt in 1877 based on the original plans. An additional fire in 1914 destroyed the interior of the building and it was rebuilt in 1915.”
Fort Street Presbyterian remains a Detroit landmark, and is definitely worth a look the next time you find yourself downtown. Address: 631 West Fort Street,Detroit.
