Casting Call — Ann Arbor Boudoir Photographer

Studio Sinead is looking for models!

In preparation for the launch of our new web site dedicated exclusively to boudoir photography, we are looking for four or five models to help us test new sets and lighting, as well as augment our portfolio. If selected, you will receive a complimentary professional makeup session along with a disc of images. You will be able to print the images for your personal use, but the copyright will remain with Studio Sinead. To qualify, you must:

1. Be 21 years of age or older. Proof of age will be requested.

2. Be 5’ 7” or taller, weight proportional to your height. Note: this does not mean that you have to be a size 0.

3. Have clear skin.

4. Be willing to sign a model release allowing us to use your image on the Studio Sinead website and/or blog. Please refrain from applying if this poses a problem for you. We do not want to waste your time, or ours.

Interested? Please email casting (at) studiosinead (dot) com and put the word Model in the subject line. Please be sure to include your name, age, and a daytime telephone number in your email. We will contact you with information about the date and time of the casting. Email inquiries only.

This casting call is for ladies only.

We’re looking forward to working with you.

Design Tuesday: Off With Her Head!

My recent maternity/boudoir posts have prompted a few of you to ask a very legitimate question: what’s up with the headless women?

I have to tell you: I feel you on that. Totally. I am definitely not a proponent of the Disembodied Woman School of Photography.

OK, it’s not that I’ve never shot body parts or unidentifiable nudes, but, generally speaking, I find it ridiculous as far as portfolio material goes. (And what is a photographer’s blog if not a portfolio?) I regularly tell my clients that beauty knows no age, weight or dress size and is something to be celebrated. But we live in a ridiculous era when a size 12 woman is considered “plus size”, places like the GAP and J Crew refuse to serve larger customers in their brick and mortar stores, and otherwise intelligent people still get their knickers in a knot over anything more than a brief glimpse of skin. On top of all that, for most women there is more than enough body shame to go around. Believe me; I have no desire to contribute to the problem. I have shot hundreds of gorgeous photos that I’d love to share with all of you, but unfortunately I can’t. Am I disappointed? You bet I am.

The thing is, I have clients who want to protect their privacy and who, therefore, restrict the ways in which I can use their maternity and boudoir pictures. Respecting their wishes is a condition of being in business, and even if I am not always happy about it, I do have to comply. Trust is an integral part of the relationship whenever you photograph anyone.

So in answer to your questions, no, the photos that you have recently seen on this site do not signal a post-feminist return to the concept of woman as chattel, object, or anything of the kind. Nor have I become a prude. I’m just a girl with a camera, trying to keep her clients happy and avoid unemployment at the same time. Believe me; right now, this is not as easy as it may sound.

Now because I hate the idea of posting without a picture, here’s a little eye candy to get you through the day. Make sure to come back for tomorrow’s casting call and to read all about how you can get some fabulous free photos for yourself.

Until then . . .

Sometimes, you have a client who’s so fun, so fresh, so fabulous that the only thing you can do is build a set in her honor and name it after her. This is The Lindsey:

And this, my friends, is Lindsey, herself:

Ooohh. La. La.

Design Tuesday: Be Inspired — Erickson Beamon at Target

Like many of you, I’ve been waiting since October to see the jewelry line that well known designers (and Detroit girls made good) Karen Erickson and Vicki Beamon produced for Target. With only the tiniest images of the same piece available on the internet, the wait has been excruciating.

As of last weekend, the pieces are in stock at select Target stores and visible (although not, it appears, for sale) on the Target website if you really hunt them down.

Unfortunately, I can’t in good conscience tell you that the wait was entirely worthwhile.
I saw some of the pieces last weekend at my local Target and I have to say that I was majorly disappointed.

I thought the jewelry looked — well — tacky. The Erickson-Beamon ladies certainly brought the bling, but, IMO, they totally forgot the wow.

The bracelets, including both cuff and charm bracelet styles, are incredibly, excruciatingly small. Perfect if you’re in the market for a bejeweled tourniquet.

The necklaces that I saw, made of chain woven with faux leather, looked like the poor relations of a similar look done much more successfully by CC Skye. The bolder, jeweled pieces just don’t do the brand justice, either. Normally, one thinks of the Erickson Beamon name on a par with say, Tom Binns. Even though the Target collection is only a diffusion line, in this case, the comparison really can’t be made.

I did think a large faux pearl and gold tone ring was pretty, and I loved the matching gob-stopper pendant, although I think it would have made a far better brooch. If you could pin that thing to a coat, dress, or jacket, you could totally get your Michelle Obama vibe on. Oh, well. C’est la mode.

The line is priced between $29.99 and $49.99, but I’m afraid that my advice is simple: ladies, save your money.

Design Tuesday: That Dress!

Don’t you love the new First Lady’s Inaugural dress? It is an Isabelle Toledo. The designer said she did not know that her dress had been chosen until she saw Mrs. Obama on television this morning. Fabulous! I can’t wait to see what she wears tonight. (Photo© Charles Dharapak via AP)

Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukkah. Good Kwanzaa. Peace.

We want to wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday season. The studio will be closed from today through January 5th, 2009. However, if you are a newly engaged 2009 bride (or groom) to be, please feel free to email us if you would like to talk to us about photographing your wedding. We will be checking email and one of us will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks so much for your friendship and support. We appreciate each and every one of you and look forward to working with friends both old and new in the coming year.

Jenna Lyons is my new girl crush. How could she be otherwise? After seeing her beautiful home in the October issue of Domino Magazine, I am totally smitten. Who would have imagined that the Creative Director of J Crew would rock her house with such a wonderful color palette? I would have thought Lily Pulitzer but instead we get Chrissie Hynde with a twist. Fabulous! I love, love, love the colors she used in her living room (upper left) and baby’s nursery (lower left.) I am beginning to think my bright red living room’s days are numbered. It’s just a hop, skip, and a jump from black nail polish to black paint on the walls. I’m ready! Working with Jenny Ferris was so much fun. One of the things I really love about this recent bride is her seemingly endless knowledge about all things Detroit. Little wonder, then, that she chose to be married at Fort Street Presbyterian, which is one of Detroit’s oldest and most beautiful churches.

Mention Detroit to most outsiders and they immediately think of cars, Motown, or the tragic events of 1967. Few realize that we live in a city that was and is vibrant and filled with history.

Fort Street Presbyterian Church is just one example of the city’s rich architectural heritage. The beautiful Gothic Revival-style building has survived several fires and rebuilding projects. According to State of Michigan Historical Preservation Office website, “the first building with the current design was dedicated in 1855 from plans by the Detroit firm of Octavius and Albert H. Jordan with James Anderson. Destroyed in 1876, the church was rebuilt in 1877 based on the original plans. An additional fire in 1914 destroyed the interior of the building and it was rebuilt in 1915.”

Fort Street Presbyterian remains a Detroit landmark, and is definitely worth a look the next time you find yourself downtown. Address: 631 West Fort Street,Detroit.

If you think I have a thing for flowers, details, and table tops, you’re right! Once again, I have to comment on a wonderfully unique decor.
Jen Smith Waxberg had an elegant wedding with many unusual details. We loved her decision to use a variety of flowers in her wedding design. Her florist, Breath of Spring, Bloomfield Hills, MI, designed the table settings using flowers of many different colors and heights and the result was a jewel box feel. In the end, the room was truly a secret garden. It was lovely and I simply can’t stop thinking about it.
